I like my paper and cardboard rocket
It might take me to the moon and back
Amidst grainy images
Of slow moving men
In their spacemen suits
Of my childhood
In a night like no other
On 1969
As mother kept us awake
With warm milk
And biscuits
In childhood dreams of fantasy

It was the cold war and the USA had to prove its superiority in space at all costs.
Did we go to the moon in 1969?

We might have done, but the pictures the astronauts took are full of inconsistencies.  NASA did not want to expose the astronauts to the dangers of the missions, like going through the Van Allen radiation belts and the fact that they had never sent anyone beyond earth orbit.

The USA had to defeat Russia’s superiority in the space race, even if they had to fake the journey to the moon and back in front of the whole world.
